Dr. Alston Choong is currently a Clinical Academician in the Sports Medicine Unit, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Malaya, and also a Sports and Exercise Medicine Physician with a special interest in sports nutrition at the University Malaya Medical Centre and University Malaya Specialist Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Graduated with a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from the National University of Malaysia, he continued to pursue his postgraduate Master of Sports Medicine (MSpMed) and subsequently attained his full registration with the National Specialist Registry (NSR), Malaysia. He also obtained the Postgraduate Diploma of Sports Medicine from International Olympic Committee (IOC), with Prof. Ron Maughan, one of the world-renowned sports nutrition experts as the course director.
Apart from being a conscientious clinician, he is conducting various scientific researches related to sport-related or musculoskeletal injuries, sports rehabilitation, sports nutrition, sports medicine, physical activity, exercise medicine, adult and childhood obesity intervention and prevention. He is also adroit in dry needling & acupuncture, osteopathic manipulative therapy, and regenerative sports medicine using orthobiologics combined with interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound injectable therapy.
Dr. Alston's active role as an educator is apparent through teaching and supervision of the undergraduate and postgraduate students, and often being invited as distinguished speakers at numerous talks, courses, workshops, seminars, symposiums, conferences, and congresses at the local and international levels. He is also a sports science instructor for the National Coaching Academy under the National Sports Institute of Malaysia.
Dr. Alston currently serves as the Vice President of the Malaysian Association of Sports Medicine (MASM). He is also an active member of the International Federation of Sports Medicine (FIMS) and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Besides being a certified high-intensity interval training (HIIT) coach, his passion also lies in the dragon boat as an elite athlete, national coach and technical officer. During his spare time, he also enjoys weight lifting, Crossfit training, swimming, hiking, running and basketball.
